SATURDAY MAY 17TH 2008

BETTER BREAKBEAT BUREAU & [THREE] PRESENT:

FREDDY FRESH

Howlin' Records, Electronic Music Foundation, Drop Bass Network, Author of 'The Rap Records' [Minneapolis]

Freddy Fresh is among the most active and prolific American underground dance music artists, having released more than a hundred records on dozens of different labels worldwide . Born and bred in St. Paul Minnesota, Fresh's name is more often associated with the London UK scene, to which he relocated in the late '90s after having top 40 chart success with 2 of his songs. Fresh's first record label was formed in late 1992 and was called Analog Recordings. His label empire then grew to include a host of sub labels (Analog UK, Butterbeat, Electric Music Foundation and then Socket and Boriqua labels) In addition to a growing stateside audience, Fresh is also one of the few contemporary non-Detroit techno/electro musicians to have a strong European following, and his records for Experimental, Harthouse, and Martin "Biochip C" Damm's Anodyne label have strengthened his international presence. Although Freddy's release history has included tracks in just about every style from hip-hop and house to techno and shit, his roots and most consistently pursued affectation lay in electro and breaks; his records thrive on buzzing modular analog noises and resolutely dirty production techniques, resulting in a distinct, instantly recognizable brand of funky, minimal, somewhat experimental dance music.

In 2004 Fresh released a reference book dealing with the history of the early independent old school rap scene that catalogues every conceivable rap label from 1979 to 1989, this book has been featured in The Source, Vibe, The New York Times, Village Voice and has gone on to win journalism awards in the United States and has been recognized as the only reference book on this subject. The book is called Freddy Fresh presents The Rap Records (Nerby Publishing LLC). Freddy recently released the brand new updated Freddy Fresh presents The Rap Records Revised 2nd Edition a mammoth book with over 740 pages and more than 2,500 color photos.

Fresh's music has also enjoyed commercial success with releases featured in films like Austin Powers Goldmember, Jackie Chan's Tuxedo and commercials by Adidas, Budweiser and Coors Lite etc.. Fresh also tours regularly and has DJ'd in over 34 countries and has performed for televised programs MTV Canada, Club TV, S2, House Viva TV, Club Spain etc.. and over 300 radio programs throughout the world including 2 sessions for the legendary late John Peel of famed Radio One BBC England.

PLUS SPECIAL GUEST:

LOCAL HERO

Trash Menagerie, War Games, Noise/Floor Crew, The New Guard [Chicago]

myspace.com/localhero
myspace.com/trashmenagerie
myspace.com/wargamesofficial

Local Hero's enthusiasm for electronic music emerged in high school, as drum and bass crept into Chicago's urban landscape, but his musical influences began at birth. Growing up in an artistic family surrounded by electronic music, his parents kept him up all night dancing and listening to the likes of Talking Heads and Jean Luc Ponty. In middle school the sounds of Cajmere's "The Percolator" echoed off hall lockers, grabbing the young hand of soon-to-be Local Hero. It wasn't, however, until the breakbeat, in the form of Big beat and early jump up jungle, crossed his path that he knew that music was not only his past but his future. He has a bachelors degree in Acoustics, which applies heavily to his control of the dance floor and his understanding of club DJing. In his spare time he designs sound systems and acoustic environments for clubs, performance halls, studios and other entertainment venues. Local Hero's performances are composed artistic layering, be it old school or new school, tech or disco, to create a poetry of sound and texture interspersed with quick cuts and deviceful mixing. Local Hero's improvisational mixing is tempered by a scientific approach to structuring the sound and stoked by his intuitive connection with the crowd.
Hailing from the resplendent city of Chicago, Local Heros DJing career has been an uphill battle. Pushing through a sea of house music, his unique style of all things fun and eclectic, be it breaks, jungle, house, electro, and many other esoteric subgenres, has earned him a regular place in the Chicago music scene. As one of the founders (along with Tolgar) of Base 10 Breaks, he has regularly thrown the only regular breaks parties in Chicago. Their brainchild, Algorhythm at the recently revived Lava Lounge, brought some of the best breaks DJs from around the world as well as highlighting some of the talented locals that grace the small but loyal Chicago breaks scene. It is this affinity for breaks that sets him apart from your typical “electro” DJ. Local Hero is able to apply the turntablism associated with spinning breaks and incorporate into his strongly electro based sets while maintaining the high-energy of that genre!
Local Hero’s most recent musical project has allied him with Chicago house music legend, Angel Alanis, to create a fresh sound incorporating all of their combined influences and outputting complexly simple upbeat electro bangers. Look out for upcoming releases on Alanis’s own A Squared Musik as well as remix works on various other labels. His ongoing promotional venture, The New Guard, had become a bastion for all the disillusioned Chicago heads that crave something beyond the same old party. Currently, besides regularly DJing all over the country, Local Hero devotes his energy to Trash Menagerie, a highly regarded music blog that focuses on finding and displaying the most innovative, new music artists and DJs that the world has to offer. He also holds down a weekly radio show, The Mathlab Sessions, every Friday from 7-9 CST on the world’s largest, most popular breaks website in the world, nuskoolbreaks. co. uk.
He is definitely a name to look out for in the coming as his intense, well-rounded sound continues to spread across the world.

For reference, by the way. . . last time Freddy Fresh played Wisconsin was DBN's Phore party in 1996.

This from his dicogs page. . . http://www.discogs.com/artist/Freddy+Fresh

"Much, much more than the person, who once said "Fatboy Slim is f**king in heaven" over 100 times on Fatboy Slim's 'You've Come A Long Way Baby' LP. Freddy, has done all sorts of great stuff during his eventful career, that started all the way back in the early 1980's.

From humble beginnings remixing Boogie Down Productions in the late 1980's, Freddy has explored in all sorts of genres (such as Latin, House, Hip-Hop, Electro and Big Beat) through the 1990's, and even sharing some top-40 success in the UK with 'Badder, Badder Schwing' in 1999 at #34 (a collabo with Fatboy Slim)."

The list of his releases is astounding. I won't repost it, just check out that discogs page. . .

Sweet! Freddy Fresh is not to miss, he's always seemed to fly right underneath the radar, but everybody in the world has probably heard something this guy has done, one way or another. . . plus Local Hero, who to me is right on the verge right now. He just completed a remix with Angel Alanis and their War Games project, its a remix of the Dizzee Rascal track 'Sirens' and I've played it twice now at [three] both times it tore up the dance floor.

This is going to be proper good fun.
